Song for Charlie Special Edition Newsletter
January 2025 Dear Friends, We’re reaching out today with heavy hearts as devastating wildfires impact communities across Los Angeles County, including Pasadena where Song for Charlie began. A significant number of our staff, associates, and extended SFC family call Southern California home, and many have been directly affected by these fires. In times of crisis—whether natural disasters, community tragedies, or any of the upheavals that shake our nation—we see people’s incredible capacity for resilience. Neighbors helping neighbors, strangers offering shelter, support flowing in from across the country. This spirit of community is a powerful antidote to trauma and loss. Yet we also know that in the aftermath of disasters, many people struggle with anxiety, depression, and the overwhelming urge to find quick relief from emotional pain. As an organization dedicated to preventing substance use tragedies, we feel it’s crucial to acknowledge this connection. When communities face trauma, the risk of turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms increases—precisely when we most need to stay connected and support one another. That’s why Song for Charlie’s work to promote healthy coping strategies and mental wellness remains constant, even in—especially in—times of crisis. We encourage everyone, whether directly impacted by the fires or watching from afar, to check in on friends and loved ones. Sometimes simply asking “How are you really doing?” can open the door to lifesaving conversations. We’ve assembled resources on our website about healthy ways for teens to manage stress and anxiety, including our Skills Over Pills and Farm Over Pharma programs. For parents looking to have difficult conversations with their children during challenging times, The New Drug Talk offers guidance and support. Here is the link to the trailer and full video: Watch the New Drug Talk Short Film. To our California community: our hearts are with you. To our nationwide network: thank you for your continued support and solidarity. Together, we remain committed to protecting young lives through all of our shared challenges. With gratitude and hope, Ed and Mary Ternan and the entire Song for Charlie Team |
